THE SAINTLINESS OF MARGERY KEMPE

April 24, 2018 |

Previews begin July 5th, 2018 at The Duke on 42nd Street

Check out the website and to purchase tickets!

Tony Award winner, John Wulp writes of Margery Kempe, an English mystic who lived in the 1300’s. She fancied herself to be extraordinary, and she wanted the whole world to be aware of this fact. She first tried to make herself notorious by throwing her lot in with the Devil and buying a brewery. When this failed she decided to pursue an opposite tack and elected to become a saint instead. Although she had no real qualifications for the job, she worked at her new career diligently. Her quest for saintliness set her free from the sexual demands of her husband and the needs of her six children. She was free to roam the world performing bogus miracles. Eventually she even made a tour of The Holy Land.

From the author: “Margery Kempe is a universal figure. In her desire to give meaning to her life, she embodies the human condition. I see in her the material for comedy, but it is a loving comedy. Although I wrote the play more than sixty years ago, it is amazingly contemporary. In her refusal to let her life be defined by men, Margery Kempe is a uniquely modern woman. But if she is timely, she is also timeless. The discrepancy between ambition and ability has always been the stuff of comedy.”

GEORGIE

November 8, 2017 |

ED DIXON – 2017 DRAMA DESK WINNER
OUTSTANDING SOLO PERFORMANCE

This roller-coaster of a show captured audiences in New York City and Washington like none other. Everyone was talking about this unique tour-de-force. Everyone was leaving the theatre in awe of what they had just witnessed. Everyone was speechless. Some reviews from the New York Production at The Loft at the Davenport Theatre:

“In recent years Ed Dixon—actor, writer, composer—has delivered two of the most wrenching literary stomach punches I’ve ever received: punch one with his autobiographical memoir, Secrets of a Life On Stage… and Off, which I read a few years ago, and punch two with his incandescent performance in his play Georgie, which just opened at The Loft at the Davenport Theater. In both cases, the punch was swift, unpredicted and straight to the gut.” Glen Roven – Huffington Post

“It has been said that theatre at its most basic is great storytelling. Georgie: My Adventures with George Rose is an exhilarating story, and indeed brilliantly told.” – BroadwayWorld

“… a first class ticket on a theatrical time machine ride. We get to sit at the feet of a great storyteller getting punch drunk on theatre memories. Brilliant text, astounding performance, astute direction – unforgettable evening.” – New York Theatre Guide

“Dixon is priceless….he holds you in his thrall for the entire 90-miniutes and proves not only a great interpreter of Rose’s life and work, but a worthy successor to his stage presence.  Oh, what a relief!” – Michael Musto – Out

“As the story progresses, the jovial, sunny performance he delivers begins to morph into a rigid and deeply sad one by the end. Director Eric Schaeffer guides this multifaceted performance into a beautifully appropriate balance of lightness and darkness. Yet even as such a horrible story comes to life before our eyes, it’s clear that no matter what, Dixon still respects his late mentor, even if his feelings now are weightier and more complicated than they were when the two first met. Georgie is a tribute to one of Broadway’s greats, while reminding us that everyone we see onstage has a story all their own.” – TheatreMania

“Hugely funny, and masterfully constructed.  For an actor, seeing this show is one of those times when you remember why you got involved in the first place.” – McPhillamyActoBlog

VANYA and SONIA and MASHA and SPIKE

August 11, 2016 |

VANYA and SONIA and MASHA and SPIKE,  by Christopher Durang, opened on Broadway at the Golden Theatre in March 2013. It received 6 Tony Award nominations and won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. It also won every Best Play Award of the 2012-13 season, including the Drama Desk, Drama League, New York Critics, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. The production has subsequently been produced at major theaters throughout the U.S., with more than 70 productions licensed during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

On the heels of its sold-out, smash-hit engagements at McCarter Theatre Center and Lincoln Center Theater, the Broadway production starred Tony and Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver, Tony and Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce, and Tony nominee Kristine Nielsen.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID:

“Even if you’ve never read a word of Chekhov, you’re likely to find plenty to make you laugh: Mr. Hyde Pierce’s skillfully low-key comic discomfort; Ms. Nielsen’s segues from manic eruption into glazed smiling stupor; Ms. Weaver’s game sendup of every self-loving, self-doubting movie queen there ever was. – The New York Times

“The Funniest Show In Town … A master class in comedy with an emotional kick!” – Bloomberg

“Crackingly funny!” – AP

David Hyde Pierce is brilliant! Christopher Durang is up to mischief again!” – New York Post

“Blithely demented and original! …Six comic virtuosos have been directed with exquisite glee by Nicholas Martin.” – Newsday

“A vibrant comic ensemble!” – Time Out NY

“Irreverent and endearing and wacky and tender!” – USA Today

“Top 10 Best Plays of 2013” – Time Magazine

“Bedlam Theatre Company works genuine miracles.” – New York Magazine, Scott Brown

“Thrilling! An unforgettable show! The most exciting George Bernard Shaw revival I’ve ever seen, bar none.” —Wall Street Journal, Terry Teachout

“An engaging, highly physical production of Shakespeare’s complex masterpiece that feels as raw and incestuous as the state of Denmark itself.” — Time Out New York, Jenna Scherer

“Masterful. One of the most entertaining theatrical experiences of the season.” – Theatermania.Com, Pete Hempstead

The theatre we make always includes the audience. Storytelling is paramount to us. We believe that innovative use of space can collapse aesthetic distance and bring the audience into direct contact with the dangers and delicacies of life––inciting laughter and chaos, exciting thinking and recreating the thrill of lived experience.

LEND ME A TENOR THE MUSICAL

August 11, 2014 |

Book and Lyrics by Peter Sham

Music by Brad Carroll

Choreography by Randy Skinner

Directed by Ian Talbot

Based on the award-winning West End and Broadway hit comedy by Ken Ludwig, Lend Me A Tenor The Musical is a musical play that sings and dances its way through a riotous, unpredictable explosion of mistaken identities and unexpected romance. Lead producers Martin Platt, David Elliott and Eileen and Allen Anes worked alongside Jason E. Grossman and M. Kilburg Reedy of Radio Mouse Entertainment.

Lend Me A Tenor The Musical’s hilarious story is set in Cleveland in 1934, where Tito Merelli, the world’s greatest tenor, has arrived to save the struggling local opera company by singing a benefit performance of Verdi’s Otello. When he is unexpectedly incapacitated, Max, the opera director’s meek assistant, is given the daunting task of finding a last minute replacement. Chaos ensues – including mistaken identities, slamming doors, a jealous wife, shrimp gone bad and the Cleveland Police department.

Lend Me A Tenor The Musical had its Olivier Award-nominated West End premiere at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End in June 2011.  The show earned four-and five-star notices and regular standing ovations from its delighted audiences.

From the London critics:

“A good-hearted show with real laughs” – The Times

“Far and away the most accomplished musical comedy opening in the West End this season” -The Stage

“Outstanding! I love this new musical comedy!” – The Independent

From the hit productions in Germany and Austria.

“WITTY, RACY, INGENIOUS: ‘Lend Me A Tenor – Otello May Not Explode Burst!’ celebrates a jubilant premier in the Musical Comedy Theater, Leipzig. A better comedy is hardly to be found today.  At least not in Germany.” – The Leipziger Volkszeitung:

Other Press:

“ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FALL OFF-BROADWAY SEASON! MOVING, SMART, SPIRITED, AND POWERFULLY FUNNY! THE FIERCELY TALENTED CAST IS FLAWLESS! Authors and performers Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter possess the strong presence and confident technique needed to bring out the subtle force and potent flavoring in their writing. As worthy as In The Continuum is, it is not a downer – the disturbing points the play gently makes about the status of black women both in America and in Africa are humanized with such emotional vibrancy that the play leaves little aftertaste of sorrow. In The Continuum leaves behind a warm afterglow of human struggles explores, illumined, and embraced. IT PULSES WITH LIFE FROM START TO FINISH!” – Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

“UNFORGETTABLE THEATER!” IN THE CONTINUUM resounds in that space between the unique and the universal, insisting the onstage world can quickly become its own. ALTOGETHER ENGROSSING!” – Mark Blankenship, Variety

“A MUST-SEE EVENT! EARTHY AND STARTLINGLY FUNNY! Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter are stars in the making and I expect it won’t be long before you’ll have to fork out a lot more money to see them in a much larger theater. Don’t wait to see IN THE CONTINNUM.” – Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal

“STUNNING. UPLIFITING, AND WITHERINGLY FUNNY! Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter are powerhouse actors – they bring pure joy to their multiple roles in this remarkably seamless dual-solo show. THRILLING, EXHILARATING AND UTTERLY DISARMING!” -Rob Kendt, Newsday

an oak tree is the story of two men brought together by loss: a father whose daughter has been killed in a car accident and the driver of that car, a small time stage hypnotist. For the first time since the accident these two men meet, when the father volunteers for the hypnotist’s act… A remarkable sequel to Tim Crouch’s My Arm (59E59 in 2004, the Public Theatre/Under The Radar in 2006), an oak tree is a bold and absurdly comic tale of loss, suggestion and the power of the mind.

TREASON

August 15, 2007 |

The Perry Street Theatre Company presents the World Premiere
TREASON
June 8-July 23
Written by Sallie Bingham, Directed by Martin Platt

He Betrayed his Country, his wife, his mistress, and his art …. or did he?

Ezra Pound was one of the most famous–and infamous–poets of his generation. He wrote operas. He translated works from Greek, Chinese and Japanese. He was instrumental in launching the careers of T.S. Eliot and James Joyce and counted among his friends Hemingway, Robert Frost, and Allen Ginsberg. He was also a womanizer, a racist, an absent father, and a traitor to his country.

Sallie Bingham’s compelling new play spans over twenty years of Pound’s life, exposing the man behind the genius through the eyes of the five women who loved him. Under Martin Platt’s direction, TREASON asks: did Ezra Pound betray his wife, mistress, girlfriend, daughter and his country – or in the end – only betray himself.

“Complex and richly ambitious…” – The New Yorker

“Superbly acted with an especially prize-worthy performance by Philip Pleasants” – The New York Times

“The Perry Street Theatre in Greenwich Village hosts its last play with the brilliant performance ofTreason. “Bingham’s Writing IsStellarAnd Platt’s  Directing Is Intelligent” – broadwayworld.com

“The ensemble is strong, and Philip Pleasants, as Ezra Pound, is particularly engaging.” – Village Voice
